2011 Blacksburg Cycling Classic Cancelled
We had our online registration open till 11:45 Wednesday night and I am deeply sorry to say that we have not met our expected budget. A combination of 60% higher costs for the race this year, lower sponsorship money, and lower registration compared to last year has made it impossible to come close to breaking even. Based on our projections from years past even "day of" and extended BikeReg would not meet our budget.
I hope this is not too great an inconvenience for those of you who have registered. This is one of the reasons why we close registration on Wednesday. There is lots of talk going on now in the VA cycling community about why there are so many cancelled races. It's a very interesting discussion and has a lot to say about the future of road racing in Virginia. It seems that it's mostly due to the higher costs of everything, races, fees, gas, hotels, etc...
We really appreciate those of you who registered and intended to come. I know many of you are returning from a very memorable event last year but it really came down to a simple math problem and for a small team of about 10 members we simply cannot afford to take a loss.
Refunds will be processed through Bike Reg. Please get the word out for anyone you know who may have been planning to register day of. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
Thanks and again I am very sorry. We were all looking forward to this event.
